So done with the OnG posting..

We-eh-ell..
Finished up with the 7th sem Gynae posting...and yes! like I've said before, this was the first time I actually went for the damn thing!!
Amazingly, I actually enjoyed the posting this time on... Maybe it was because I was posted with a really good Unit in the Dept... but whatever.. made the most of it and basically liked it all!! :)

Here are some things I learnt during the month:
1. Donning gloves is not all that tough :P
2. How to identify a full bladder and catheterize a female.
3. The boys in our Unit don't care a shit to come and attend the classes.
4. Some male gynecologists are actually good at teaching! (hats off to CP Sir)
5. AJ's long locks are noticable to all. ;)
6. You can never find the teacher if u're late on 'free days'!!
7. If u go into the OT, when some resident has done their first op, you get to eat sweets! :)
8. AIDS counselling for pregnant ladies is NOT compulsory!!! So... beware, when u're taking those deliveries in the labour room.
9. Giving birth to a baby is TOUGH on the mom... more so for a primipara!!
10. A woman CAN have a 10 month old baby and *still* be 7 months pregnant.
11. Gynaecologists in general... love eating! [prem-vilas ke samose] ;)
12. You must get your attendance registered on the same day...or they'll mark you absent.
13. While doing the 2nd Pelvic Grip, the ulnar border of the hand should rest on the pubic symphysis of the patient.
14. There's a room next to the PV room, that is exclusively meant for students to study!!
15. Most couples don't believe in birth control!
16. There's a LOT to learn.
17. Fourth Unit rocks!!

My First Time At Labour Room

Yesterday was the first time I set foot into the Ummed Hospital labour room, which by the way caters to the huge population of the entire Jodhpur district & more for conducting deliveries...(:see the PSM works here!!!)

First of all, let me clear up one thing for fellow medics who’ve actually bothered to linger around for so long at the blog (this is barring aside ritz, of course!).

You must be wondering WHY did I have to wait till the 7th sem to go to the labour room for the first time..!!??!! Well, the fact here is that I was seriously apprehensive of what was there to see in there. The thought of seeing even a “normal delivery” was kind of scary & I kept putting it off……..

& vaise we haven’t been posted as much in the O&G dept as such (the 3rd sem posting, well we kindof bunked; & the 5th sem posting, was missed coz of the univ exams!!!)…

So there I was at the Labour room yesterday…standing with D & Urmila (who had been to the area previously & seen deliveries!!).

Well.. while standing there, the first thing I got to see was the removal of the placenta…. Frankly, the sight was pretty nauseating at first—seeing all the blood... but made through that & while I was revelling in the feat--- that was seeing the process,---- a lady was brought in wherein the crowning had already occurred & was abt to deliver!! Boss, gave a quick episiotomy incision, & what started to come out was a dirty, black thingie…I thought for a moment that the baby was dead & macerated….

But the “black thingie” turned out to be the baby’s head & as boss externally rotated & pulled on the trunk, I wondered if she was trying to decapitate the kid. But then, out came the trunk & the legs… & a li’l boy was born!!! He cried at once to announce his safe arrival!

He was gross!!!! Covered in fluids & blood… Not a pretty sight… But as the nurse took him to the incubator & cleaned him up, he started gaining a bit of colour. As he was weighed, he got active & started moving out hands & feet. Looked amazing now!!!

It took hardly two minutes for him to come out of the womb, all filthy & transform into this b’ful little human being!!!

Now, I realize why its called “the miracle of birth”…..

As we were watching this baby, another one was born…. It was a if it was raining kids that day!!!

This one was a girl & had her cord tied round her ankle…It was cyanosed… As boss untangled the cord, the foot became normal & we heard her first cry!!

Another one was a breech presentation…

There was one who refused to cry & had to have the paeditrician come & do a check up!!

Now then, amidst all the deliveries, we also got to see some sutures done & got to administer oxygen to this girl who was cyanosed, & administer methergine injection to the iv line…

Basically, after seeing all these deliveries, I’ve found the Labour Room a pretty interesting place to be…& maybe you’re reading the blog of a “future Obstetrician” right now… :) (vaise lemme clear up one thing here…that my future plans change with every other posting…… so it might not be long before you get to hear from a “future Surgeon” too!!!) ;)

Anyways, I just need to write this down coz my fellow “A-batchmates” (except D, who was with me all the time) would’nt even listen to my labour room stories…… So I decided to drop the bomb on YOU!!!!

Cheers!

I'll Be There For Youuu....

The pulling each others' legs o'er each small thing,

The lifting up spirits when one is down,

The going together for a shake or a coffee,

& trying to wipe off each others' frown.

The begging for treats on every occasion,

The planning to go on morning walks.

The "detailed discussions" of the future,

All the while sitting around in .....................!!

The notions to do something different,

The writing applications to the Dean.

The decisions to watch a movie,

Over the long list of movies already seen!!

The unlimited hours of gossip,

The kind words of encouragement.

The long talks over the phone,

& ALL the messages that are sent...!!

All these things--& more,

May seem to last just a while.

But the moments are PRICELESS,

& that's bein' FRIENDS FOR LIFE..!!!!

fOR.... adi,avi,ankita,navy,kaushik & ritz!!!!!

Save The Last Dance For Me

You can dance-every dance with the guy
Who gives you the eye, let him hold you tight
You can smile-every smile for the man
Who held your hand 'neath the pale moon light

But don’t forget who’s takin’ you home
And in whose arms you’re gonna be
So darlin’ save the last dance for me

Oh I know that the music’s fine
Like sparklin’ wine, go and have your fun
Laugh and sing, but while we’re apart
Don’t give your heart to anyone

But don’t forget who’s takin’ you home
And in whose arms you’re gonna be
So darlin’ save the last dance for me

Baby don’t you know I love you so
Can’t you feel it when we touch
I will never never let you go
I love you oh so much

You can dance, go and carry on
Till the night is gone
And it’s time to go
If he asks if you’re all alone
Can he walk you home, you must tell him no

‘Cause don’t forget who’s taking you home
And in whose arms you’re gonna be
Save the last dance for me

‘Cause don’t forget who’s taking you home
And in whose arms you’re gonna be
So darling, save the last dance for me
Save the last dance for me
Save the last dance for me.

Books That 'M Enjoying..

I wanted to list some Medical Texts that I've consulted recently & found pretty interesting... Not for the "immense knowledge" that they endow.. but for the totally random (& at most times useless!) facts that they contain.... They do make pretty interesting reading..(the facts I mean..):

*Actually these two are the ONLY books that I've liked in all my years in College!

Book 1: Clinical Medical Examination By Talley/O 'Connor
This one makes good reading. Has the bare minimum of clinical aspects required but is filled with random facts about diseases & scientists...
-Did u know that Gullian-Barre disease was also supposed to have another name in the entymology: Strol. Initially it was Gullian-Barre-Strohl disease, but the last name was dropped due to the anti-German feelings during the WW-II . Poor Strohl was sent into anonymity coz of being German!
See... that's the kind of stuff u'll learn from the book!! :)

One quote from the book that I really love:
"To study the phenomenon of disease without books is to sail an uncharted sea.
But to study book without patients, is not to go to the sea at all!"

Book 2: Oxford Handbook Of Clinical Medicine.
This one is a small pocket book which actually has the PRACTICAL aspects needed!
Just started this one but am thoroughly enjoying it. This one too has some random stuff, though most of it is in the form of lines from literature. Has some really good mnemonics.
I prefer this one for a bedtime read these days.
Worth a try.

The End Of An Era

2004-
The last episode of the Final Season of F.R.I.E.N.D.S. was aired...
Back then it was sad... to know that I'll never be able to watch another new episode of the show again...to know that there won't be any wait for the next season to begin... to know that there won't be any more cliff-hangers to discuss...
Well.. as Monica put it---it was "the end of an era"...

It was hard! But I pulled through knowing that there was STILL something else in my life that would keep me going. Something else that I was passionate about. Something that meant the world to me. Something that I knew still had endless stories to tell.. Yes... The last two books of Harry Potter were still there to look forward to!

21st July,2007:
The most awaited day of the year (apart from 15th March, of course!) was HERE!
It was a flurry of mixed emotions... I was apprehensive ( "What would the end be like"-wasn't this the most hyped about question??), yet excited (man!I woke up early that morning..!)
Nervous (Of course.. there was WAR in the book!!), yet looking forward to reading all the chapters (I was mortally afraid that someone would spill the spoiler before I'd finished..!)
Sad (knowing that it was the END!), yet happy (could've produced the BEST Patronus when I heard Chapter one being read by Jo on the net!!!)

In the morning,an hour before I got the book, it was as if --Ritu quotes Monica-- as if, "I had slept with a hanger in my mouth!" Couldn't stop grinning ear to ear... Even our Obs&Gynae teacher, who had an early morning class that day, must've wondered what was so funny about the "Management of twin births" ... Well.. it was the same for all of us Potter-heads at class...
Anyways...30 hours later.... as I almost reached the end.... I was crying!!! & howling at that too!!! I knew who died!!! Oh!It was SAD!!

But then I finished through the book... A nasty feeling crept over... It was all over... No more Potter!!! All the secrets were out. Now there won't be anymore books to look forward to. No more theories to go through. No more endless hours of discussions about what was to come. No more waiting day-by-day for the next book. No more setting of the new book cover as the Profile Pic or Mobile wallpaper (eh, Ritz,Avi,Shruti??)... It had all come to an end.

So here concluded another thread of life. It was the worst feeling! Oh! I wish I could've read a bit slower... And try as I might, I still can't feel as close to any other novel as I was to the Potter books... There was magic in them,to get even a non-reader like me to love 'em!

Well..now it stays... F.R.I.E.N.D.S. & Potter... gone...ended...finished!!!! Let's see if I can find something else that I'm as passionate about, as I was to these two...
Any suggestions???

The Making Of A Doctor

The beginning of third semester at college is marked by a lot many changes—the most prominent & exciting being the commencement of clinical ward postings—which is basically what this piece of paper is filled with…

Now, just the idea of going to “The Hospital”, in sparkling white aprons- with steths around the neck to complete the picture- is enough to make you feel like half-a-doctor.
And add to that, the sense of freedom which comes with the posting-timings!!! You already feel high, as if on dope!!
The friends, the bikes, the open roads of Sardarpura….
Finally, a whole new world of juice shops and cafes opens up around you. The city becomes your canteen and hanging around these joints a routine.

So then, after a hearty celebration of this new-found independence over a cold shake & a samosa, you decide to head for the hospital !!

As you reach about an hour late for the clinic; you realize that the hospital is no joke & finding your way to the department is a Herculean task in itself.
And oh! Amidst all this confusion, when you yourself are lost in the buzzing activity of the hospital with stretchers being hurled around & people pushing you all over the place, you are stopped by a couple of attendants (or sometimes, an occasional patient), asking you the directions to the “orthopedics department” or else whereabouts of a certain physician who seems to have gone on a long vacation !!
This is where a sense of helplessness creeps in, & you try to explain to them that you are as new to the surroundings as they are. The attendants leave, giving you a look of disgust—as if saying-- “Why the hell carry that steth around, when you haven’t a clue!!”

Well, crossing all obstacles & evading any further enquiries, you finally make it to the ward. There you see about a dozen of your classmates, almost as dazed as you are.

You are then asked to go and “take the history” of a case who has been admitted & confined to the ward for days together; & is already irritable with ‘pseudo-docs’ like you trying to comprehend his disease. After a few minutes of inspection and a bit of palpation, he hushes you off by pin-pointing his exact disease & the drugs that he is on. You lap-up all this information happily, feeling like the brightest medical student there ever was…with a smile of contentment brightening up your face.

You decide to present the so-called ‘history’ to the doctor, when to your disgust, you find that it is the in-house resident who will listen to it (‘C’mon.. my first history deserves nothing less than the HOD’, you think!!)

Anyway, as you start presenting the history, you are stopped on the very first line & mocked at… ‘Is this how you present a history…Even a fresher can do better than that!!’,the resident exclaims.
Oh! The humiliation!
‘It’ll be okay!’, you think, & decide to move on. As you read out the words on the paper, you realize what sub-standard crap you have penned down-- & feel like the smallest creature on the planet.
Every word and line seems like a blunder & you wish you had never gone to that patient for the history!
Somehow, you manage to finish through & by the end what remains of the three page ‘history’, which you had so proudly put on paper, is merely a few pronouns and prepositions.

All the mockery done with, you are told to go study a-bit, “or else you’ll never pass MBBS!!” With this, as the resident leaves, the patient gives you a sly smile, as if he knew all along what kind of a quack you were.
You decide on your honour to never ever take a history again, let alone present it in front of everyone.

Finally, the grueling time comes to end with you registering your attendance & rushing back to college for the scheduled practical class, all the while thinking…..
“Will I ever make a doctor??”
